Body Doubling: Why Doing Things Together Just Works
A recent 2024 study found that nearly half of 220 participants said body doubling was most likely to help them finish tasks, while only a few (3.2%) found it less effective. With so many distractions these days, staying focused can be tough. While techniques like Pomodoro or the “one-second rule” can help, this article looks at another scientifically proven tool, especially helpful for neurodivergent people: body doubling.
What exactly is Body Doubling?
Body doubling is simply using the presence of others to help you get things done. It can work with friends or strangers, whether you’re together in person or online. Interestingly, the other person doesn’t need to help, coach, or even talk to you. Simply having someone there can make it much easier to start and continue with a task.
Why It Works
People naturally feel more focused, safe, and motivated when they’re not alone. Having a body double can be a steady reminder that you’re supported, which helps you keep going. Many people with ADHD, anxiety, or executive function challenges find body doubling really helpful. Research suggests it works by:
- Accountability without pressure – You’re more likely to stay on task because someone’s “with” you.
- Co-regulation – Our nervous systems naturally calm and sync when we share space.
- Motivation and momentum – Once you start alongside someone else, the task feels less overwhelming.
What It Looks Like in Real Life
- Sitting in a café with a friend, each of you working on your own projects.
- Your friend is on the other end of a video call while you prepare for your exams.
- Folding laundry while chatting on the phone with someone doing the same.
- Joining an online co-working or “focus room” where cameras are on, but conversation is minimal.
It’s not about having someone supervise you. Instead, it’s about being present together and finding motivation in that shared experience. Sometimes, just showing up together makes all the difference.
How ShareWell Supports With Body Doubling
At ShareWell, body doubling takes the form of virtual co-working sessions, peer matching for accountability, or task-specific groups (such as study hours or laundry time). Again, it’s not about someone watching over you, but about having a peer alongside you—that’s what we’re all about. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to do your daily tasks alone. It’s a great way to increase productivity while reducing burnout.
